the veil of the world

wheeled curve of the earth rolls
bent wing of water,
sharp tongues of storm,
whips fire along the ground
for the chasing world-monster,
bow-bellied and hunched
over creation-the-prey-
under and behind, in
all concealments, holes,
small and large secrets,
night in the original shadow
is oblivious to sight.

still you
bow your head
flat to the earth
in homage to the greater beyond

without which,
your veil
would flutter uselessly
against the four winds.
